  • MODERN LOVE STORIES: A NARRATIVE INQUIRY OF INTERRACIAL COUPLES

    Abstract

This study aimed to fill the existing gap in the literature by examining how early attachment relationships and cultural narratives intersected to shape the experiences of interracial romantic relationships. The research explored the lived experiences of two interracial couples using a qualitative narrative inquiry approach grounded in social constructivism and attachment theory. It offered valuable insights that can inform both academic understanding and clinical practice. Narrative accounts of the coupling process of interracial couples are presented, including a discussion of how each partner’s early childhood relationships and culture influenced their beliefs about romantic love, the purpose of coupling, and their meaning-making. A thematic analysis revealed four overarching themes between both couples: family expectations, balancing power dynamics and gender roles, developing an intercultural couple partnership, and the benefits of culturally informed couples therapy. Practical clinical strategies for couples and family therapists are also provided to strengthen interracial relationships and foster mutual understanding in a multicultural context.
